Shocking: 3,000 Skeletons To Be Exhumed For Construction Work
The thought of 3,000 bodies about to be exhumed from the Beldam cementry on Liverpool Street has caused a blend of shock and amazement in many residents.
Among them are political activists, a former lord mayor of London and a notorious criminal. It is thought around 3,000 skeletons will need to be excavated during the work on Crossrail, which begins next month.
The remains will be taken to consecrated ground and reburied
Bedlam burial ground was established in 1569 to help parishes cope with overcrowding during outbreaks of plague and other epidemics.
Jay Carver, lead archaeologist at Crossrail, said: ‘This research is a window into one of the most turbulent periods of London’s past.
‘These people lived through civil wars, the Restoration, Shakespeare’s plays, the birth of modern industry, plague and the Great Fire.
