No fewer than five people were critically burnt and properties worth millions of naira destroyed in a fire incident which occurred along Arakale road, Akure, Ondo State capital, Saturday night.

The incident, which started at a gas outlet beside St. Thomas’ Anglican Church, a densely populated area of the state capital around 7: 45 pm was said to have been caused by gas explosion.

According to a witness, the odour of the gas rented the air few minutes before the explosion with staff of the gas station trying to find solution to it before it finally exploded.

The witness said immediately after the explosion, people started running for safety as it was initially believed, it was bomb explosion.

Traders who have their shops around the gas station and had earlier closed for the day, have to rush back to evacuate their wares so as to protect it from being burnt.

Witnesses said men of the state Fire Service could not arrived the venue of the incident on time, but that men the Federal Fire Service attached to the Akure Airport who later came to arrest the situation, were attacked by an angry mob.

The mob who thought the fire service men were from the State Fire Service descended on them as men of the State Fire Service said they did not have fuel in their fire trucks and as such could not go for water.

It took the combined efforts of men of the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Defence Corps and men of the 323 Artillery Brigade to disperse the mob as some hoodlums have already taken the advantage of the incident to loot shops.
